Payload or Towing: They Are Different Numbers
This is the conversation that saves the most trouble on a used truck lot in a working county. Payload is what the truck can carry, in the bed and the cab, including passengers. Towing is what it can pull behind it. They are separate ratings, they are limited by different parts of the truck, and a truck that is comfortable at one can be over its limit at the other. Worse, adding weight in the bed reduces what you can safely tow, so the two interact rather than sitting side by side.
Which number governs depends on the job. Pallets of material, tools, a slide-in toolbox and three people is a payload question, and the answer lives on the door jamb label of the individual truck rather than in a brochure. A trailer, a skid steer on a deck or a boat is a towing question, and the answer depends on engine, drivetrain, axle and what trailering equipment is actually fitted.
